The Stuff of Nightmares

--Adrienne

They say that the devil come in many guises. My personal favorite has to be the poodle from Faust.

Yeah, there's no way I'm taking you seriously looking like that, Father of Lies.

But the most effective had to be serpent. Those things are terrifying. Glassy, lidless eyes.  Arrow-shaped head. A jaw that unhinges. No legs but they can move faster than I can run--sure, that's not saying much, but still.

I can't imagine a better symbol of pure evil. Yeah, yeah, I know. They're just another animal. Important part of the ecosystem and all that. But just look at this guy.

I rest my case. No wonder these things have haunted my every nightmare since I was a child.

Really, every nightmare I have ever had ends like this. Just. Like. This.

Except the ones that end with eels bites. They're slightly more terrifying. But only slightly.

Sorry, but I like snakes and eels, especially eels. I'm a scuba diver and eels stay in their hidey-holes in the reef during the day with just their head out and lay in wait for little fishies to swim by. Humans are just too big, you big scaredy cats. Now, stairs, those scare me. I'm certain that I'm going to fall down every set of stairs I come to, even ones with only one step.

Barbara--Yeah, I'm totally guilty of being a big scaredy cat. Fears are rarely rational. Something about those pointy head hits me on a visceral level. I even recoil from pictures of them.

I'm not a eel person, but snakes don't bother me. I grew up nor cal, lots of rattlers. But it is the image and icon for evil. Poor snake.

At least I don't live in Australia. That has always seemed like the Land O' Snakes to me. Venomous snakes at that.

The good thing about snakes is they eat rodents. I really dislike little mousies around my housie.
